Own it Monday!

Welcome back to the work week, readers! So many things are universally hated; taxes, in-laws, Justin Bieber, annoying pop stars. For the most part we can change these. Save for your taxes, find common ground with the in-laws, change the music on your mp3 player/radio. One thing we cannot change are Mondays. All week we look forward to Friday, enjoy the weekend and dread the beginning of the work week. While we cannot change what day we head back to the office (for those who have a 9-5, Mon-Fri. schedule) we can change our perspective.

Change your attitude towards Monday. See, you wake up and perhaps your first thought is “ugh, Monday”. Next week, before those words pop in your mind take a moment to recognize a big step you took. You woke up. You have another day to make your own. Its another chance to start over. Whether you failed on a diet, missed a couple workouts, or a few deadlines at work last week, today, right now, you can change the way the rest of this week will go.  If you decide to succeed or fail on Monday, it’s on you! Sure, you’ll run into problems at work, traffic on the road, and a multitude of other issues but how you react to them is up to you. Each problem presented to you an opportunity to grow.

Set goals for today, and for the rest of the week. Do something that will give you that sense of accomplishment for today. Whether it is getting a report done early, or adding extra weights at the gym tonight, set a goal that you can achieve for today. Starting off the week feeling that you’ve gotten something done, and in excellence, will enhance your attitude. Next week, set your own-it-Monday goals over the weekend. This way you’ll set yourself up for success.

Make sure that you add a cushion to your goals; something that will help you achieve success regardless of what happens. Maybe that will be going the extra mile for your employer, assisting a co-worker, or a healthy meal that will satisfy your hunger but not impede whatever fitness goals you’ve created. Throw in a set of squats if you can’t get a full work out in today.

If you feel that the first part of your day didn’t go so well then take this afternoon by the horns! You already know what will happen for the rest of your afternoon. You’re stuck behind a desk, or a counter or somewhere you generally don’t want to be. If this isn’t you then you have no reason to not seize the day!

For you fitness fanatics, what better way to take charge of your day by adding something new to your routine. Something that will make you feel like you’ve conquered the world! Your world! Mainly, your body. How will this help you “own Monday”? By doing something you’ve never tried before and succeeding at it you’ve made Monday a day where you OWNED that new technique, that extra set of bicep curls, you’ve run that extra mile.. something you didn’t do last week.

Do it TODAY! Go home and, in the words of Larry the Cable Guy:

Burn baby burn! (Disco inferno!)

Woo!! It’s Friday people! Who doesn’t love Fridays? (People who work on the weekends and do insane hours, you can gloss over the next few lines.) Your plans for the weekend are either set, or they are in the works. Some even have their workout routine in the mix (you go fit-fanatic!). If that isn’t in the future for you though, read on.

So picture this (you won’t even have to close your eyes). You’re behind your desk, your lunch is sitting in your stomach like a rock. Your energy is slowing down and if you have to see one more email pop up on your screen you’ll go postal! Great way to break up the monotony, and get in some cardio before your full blown workout, is to have a 5 minute dance party!

Woohoo! Break out the piñata!

Now if you happen to share space like these fine people then either share the wealth of your music (ask first) or find a space you can let loose. Wake up your senses and get your heart pumping (pumping pumping pumping)! Don’t let the rhythm die there. Keep something with an almost mellow beat pumped into your ears and you’ll subconsciously groove to the music while you sit at your desk. Even on the commute home, keep those endorphins flowing through your body and let the rhythm of your tunes move you.

We may sound a little corny here, but honestly you can’t say that a little bit of toe tapping, or head bopping can hurt. Unless you’re in a full body cast or something… then it might. Otherwise, this small amount of movement will serve as a form of exercise for those who don’t have time to run to the gym or even have a moment to think. That’s the great thing about music. You only need to hear it to feel something. Then later tonight, while you’re cooking dinner, doing the laundry, or some thing else that keeps you inside, TURN UP THE VOLUME! Break it down old school or tear up that wall to wall carpeting with your best dance moves. Vicki Baum said it best:

Check out this woman at a bus stop. She gets it.

Get fit. Make friends. Have fun!

The Home Stretch

It’s the home stretch at work, on a  Wednesday. You’ve made it through the first half of the week but still have the second half to go. It’s just after two and you’ve probably got one thing on your mind, sleep! So you reach for the energy drink you bought, go get some coffee or scrounge around the breakroom looking for a sugar fix. But there maybe a simpler option to feel revitalized enough to finish the day and do so productively.

  1. Stand up and stretch! Sitting at your desk all day can wear anyone out but just the simple movement of getting on your feet can give you a tiny boost. Click here to view some nifty stretches you can do right in your office then try them out for yourself. So go ahead, stand up.  If you don’t have an office to move in private, find a stairwell or a small space you won’t be gawked at…unless you like that sort of thing.
  2. Music soothes the savage beast; we’ve all heard this phrase at some point in our lives. Right now that savage beast is fatigue. It’s hanging around you, stemming from the carb-a-licious lunch you had this afternoon. Blast something upbeat! Put those slow jams away, and let the rhythm get ya! Just like a beat can put your body in sync at the gym, the same can be said of the daily grind.
  3. Laugh! Laughter is the best medicine! Mainly because it’s free. But laughter can wake you up just be stretching the muscles in your face, triggers the release of endorphins, which promote a sense of well-being. Lets face it, you could be at your desk shuffling through mounds of paperwork or you could be this dance crewfunny-gif-dance

So, what are you waiting for? Go, move, get your boost on Wake Up Wednesday!
