Own It Monday

Road Rage

Its Monday again! In the past we’ve spoken on how to get over the fact that it’s Monday. Yet somehow, it still creeps up on us. Sure, we may not have the job we want or we do have the job we want but surrounded by people who seem to make us think otherwise. We could even have the job we want, we like who is around us but for what ever reason, we still dread Monday.

Well if you’ve had a terrible morning or seem like you can’t get rid of that funk you woke up with, remember it’s all on you how you go through the week.

It’s Monday. Make it YOURS. The ball is in your court, or rather you’re at the helm and you need to steer your week, TODAY. The attitude you have right now is going to set the pace for the rest of the week. So if you dread today simply because you’ve gone back to work, you’ll dread the rest of the week from the moment your eyes close to the moment they open again.

So what are you waiting for? Pull up your grown-up undies and deal with it! Are there reports to be done? Do it! Is there a certain goal you have to reach with sales, or with a client? Do what has to be done to get there. Recite a mantra if that’s what gets you going.

You may be reading this and thinking to yourself, “you said this already”. Well, sometimes things are worth repeating and since the world is full of people who still hate Mondays, it means not everyone has either read what we’ve said or they’ve read it and brushed it off.

Do us a favor: Pick one thing that’s good about today and recite it to yourself all day long. Maybe its the fact that you have a job when many others don’t; or the fact that your car is running or you had money for transportation. If you can’t think of something good then think of how you would like them to be. Do you feel like this week is on top of you already? Then tell yourself “I can do this. I’m on top of it. Its my week.” If that’s not going to work, figure out something that will.

Then, when you’re work day is done, after you’ve worked for “THE MAN”, do something for yourself. No, I don’t mean sit back with a bottle of wine, or a pound of chocolate or even a six-pack. I mean, hit the gym! Preferably our gym located at 566 S Broad Street in Glen Rock, New Jersey (yes that is shameless self-promotion and we’re fricken proud of it!), but if you don’t belong to a gym go to a park and use the jungle-gym. There is a good chance kids aren’t there anyway, so who better than you to use it?

Get your phone or iPod (or whatever you use for tunes) packed with high energy music or something that gets you going and pound the pavement! Even if its just a 10 minute walk, you’ll feel better when it’s over. Besides, tomorrow is Tuesday and before you know it, its Monday all over again.

Summer Lovin’! Getting your sweat on in the sweltering heat

With the warm season upon us, many of us like to get out from under the shelter of a nice cool gym and take our fitness routine to the streets. Be it the sidewalk, a quiet street, or a playground with an intricate jungle gym, the sunshine and fresh air beats any building with blaring club music any day. There are some things to remember though as the heat index rises over the next few months.

  1. STAY HYDRATED!
  • This point seems to be pretty obvious. An article on WebMD reminds us that “our bodies are warmer than the environment. When that begins to change, our muscles regulate heat by releasing sweat, which allows the body to cool itself. But when the body is sweating, it’s losing fluid.”

2. EXERCISE DURING COOLER HOURS OF THE DAY

  • It is recommended to work out either early in the morning or early in the evening before a serious afternoon heat wave. Remember, nothing too strenuous either! If you do feel like giving yourself a challenge, go to the one place you can always depend on .. the gym!

3. DRESS ACCORDING TO THE WEATHER

  • Lighter clothes in hot weather! Always a given, try not to wear dark clothes during sun beaming days. Stick with skin breathable fabrics, cotton/polyester, anything loose-fitting, and comfortable.

4. PROTECT YOUR SKIN

  • Mom’s weren’t kidding when they stressed out, “Don’t forget to apply your sunscreen!” There is nothing fun about a sunburn, SPF 20 (or higher) is the way to go. It’s always better to feel your skin protected than to feel the burn (unless it’s the burn of your muscles from that work out). Aside from wearing sunscreen, there’s different ways to protect yourself. Such as wearing sunglasses, visors (they’re pretty fashionable nowadays, ya know) or just a regular ol’ school baseball cap!

And that sums it up on how to protect yourself from a heat wave that can cause dehydration, hallucinations, dizziness, and or a serious sunburn! Don’t be that victim. It’s the small things that count, like applying sunscreen before heading out or having that nice sip of fresh cold water to hydrate. Most important, if you feel depleted in any way, get yourself into a nice cool area ASAP! Dehydration is nothing to mess with! Enjoy your summer 🙂

Can you feel the love? – Fitness with Passion

Sometimes its a little bit sickening how friendly we are here at VOLT. This cynical writer sometimes can’t take that morning sunshine of smiles and even hugs! Seriously, where else do you see trainers hug other trainer’s clients?  And everyone is still cool with it? The community and family feeling is definitely here. All the time. Everyday. This writer has never heard so much laughter on the gym floor. On any gym floor! Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of struggling faces and grunts along with the laughter, but still the laughter wins.

Weight Lifting Hamster
Do you even lift?

Then again, its a lot better than having Miley Cyrus’ playlist being pumped through the sound system or random shouts of “YEAH BUDDY” after a weight has been dropped on the floor. It just goes to show that the trainers, every trainer, is here to make sure each client reaches their goal and maintains it. I suppose there are things worse than a happy gym. Frankly, who wants to go to a gym where the staff are unfriendly, and the atmosphere is cold? I guess that’s why I keep coming back. Aside from the fact that I get paid.

Eat the Stress Away!!!

Junk Food

Yeah!!! Eat your stress away! Wooo! Let’s go in, people! What do we have in front of us? Some chips? Some soda? Maybe a little cake snack?

Little Debbie
You sassy mistress you…

If you’re not by your desk already, you’re thinking about going back. Back to the grind. Back to the deadlines, and the bosses, and really? Again with those cover sheets!? Or maybe you’re back to something that really grinds your gears.  Perhaps an overly open co-worker who just had to tell you about their bunion; or maybe even the little twerp who just started and somehow has a house in the Hamptons where they will be spending the weekend with their other little hipster friends complaining about, oh I don’t know, there is going to be just a little too much tequila for their singing shots weekend. Whatever it is (especially you work from home readers) you’re bound to be stressed out and looking for some sort of release. Look out afternoon crash!

So what can you do to relieve some of this stress without grabbing the nearest office equipment and smashing it to bits? Well, take your coffee break but don’t get coffee! After doing a small bit of research, a few foods came up that were pretty common to increase the peace.

  1. TEA
    1. YEP! Try it out you java-nuts! Apparently CAFFEINATED teas like black teas, green teas and oolong teas will release the stress and even keep you alert enough to get through the final hours of your day at the office.
  2. NUTS!
    1. Crunching on nuts seems to relieve some of that tension you have building up while you listen to the inane chatter of those around you. They have plenty of vitamins ( Vitamin B2 and E, as well as magnesium and zinc, almonds are high in fat, but most of the fat is unsaturated) that will boost your body into that kicking-butt-and-taking-names mode.  So crack it like its hot or open a bag of blue diamonds!
  3. APPLES AND BANANAS
    1. Obviously fruits are a good choice to make whenever you’re putting some form of energy in your body. These two fruits in particular really get the stress out. First, it covers the need to release aggression (with the apple anyway). Both are chock full of vitamins that you lose when you’re just going through your day and according to one article just sniffing a green apple will relieve stress. Frankly, I’d rather just eat it.
  4. DARK CHOCOLATE
    1. I thought at first this was a joke. Apparently, it lowers stress hormones and of course the sugar is an added bonus. Keep the portions in check though. Want to knock out a few suggestions in one? Try an Almonds Mounds. Chocolate, fruit, and nuts all in one!

Hot Mess Workout

Hot Mess Workout that looks pretty awesome!

fitjunkee

hotmess1.jpg

Today’s challenge is a full body sculpting workout. The exercises in this circuit will train your quads, glutes, hamstrings, lower back, obliques, abs, chest, triceps, biceps, and shoulders. There are 3 sets of exercises in this circuit: legs, abs, and arms.

I used my new set of Bowflex interchangeable weights (which I absolutely LOVE), and my hyper extension machine. If you do not have a hyper extension machine, try doing the movements from the floor. You can substitute leg lifts for the sit ups, oblique hip lifts for the oblique portion, and supermans for the back extension.

This is a great routine for those looking to get a great full body workout all at once. I didn’t have much time to dedicate to long workouts this week, so I decided to lump some important exercises all into one great challenge. Try doing 5 minutes of cardio in between each section…

There isn’t any chalky after taste and it does in fact make you feel good after eating it. Even the shakes are pretty tasty. All are included in the 30 Day Cleansing and Fat Burning system. Now to prove that this stuff works, you have to be very disciplined. Most products that are similar don’t require much work but Isagenix makes sure that you get to your goal in the safest way possible. Keep that in mind, because the next 30 days will not be easy! Then again, nothing worth while is ever easy.
